' TAKING
RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR CONSUMPTION’
Noosa Landcare Farm Forestry (NLFF)
creates and promotes the concept and
vision of successful ‘whole
of landscape’ management through
forestry to a core network of employees,
contractors, landholders, industry,
volunteers and Local Government leading
to a broad scale acceptance and a
willingness to invest in regional
plantation development and appropriate
revegetation. This section of Noosa
& District Landcare Group consistently
promotes and supports the advantages
of this concept providing a momentum
for continuous industry development.
NLFF Program operates out of Pomona
in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.
Its operations however, are not restricted
to the local area with plantations
and revegetation works being carried
out in areas such as Gold Coast, Wondai,
North Deep Creek and Double Island
Point.

Nursery
The Farm Forestry Program oversees a
purpose built nursery with professional
nursery management and support staff.
Capacity of 100,000-135,000 plants annually.
Direct seeding technology forms the
basis of extensive quality control program
delivering to the public, research organizations,
outside contractors and our own contracts,
top quality plants conditioned for project
specific conditions.
Seed Supply. This propagation facility
is supported by a comprehensive seed
collection and processing network ensuring
genetic integrity for the various geographic
planting zones serviced. The majority
of this network is centered around the
Mary Valley and adjacent coastal regions.
The nursery is presently going through
an operational upgrade which will see
a full recycling of runoff and maximum
capture and utilization of building
runoff to minimize reliance on reticulated
water supplies. It is also envisaged
that restructuring of nursery facilities
will increase production by a further
20% annually.
Noosa & District Landcare also has
a second nursery facility that concentrates
on diversity of species for revegetation
propagation, which provides 50 - 70,000
tubestock per year and is accessible
to supplement our supplies as required.

Forestry : Education and
Training
A staged workshop series with supporting
literature has been developed and implemented,
forming the keystone to successful on
ground forest development over a wide
range of sites, resources and landholder
capacity. ‘In field’ adult
education processes such as demonstration
and participation has been crucial for
the successful teaching of the critical
elements of timing and process in forest
establishment and management.
The use of private property developments
as demonstration sites for workshops,
field days and bus trips presents participants
with a working example of best practice
management and the on-ground recognition
of silvicultural theory. |
| - |
NLFF services
- Administers the Noosa Council free
tree program, comprehensive forest establishment
series
- Maroochy Council extension programs,
property planning forest silviculture
- delivery of training elements for
Silver Lining Foundation indigenous
youth
- delivery of training elements to NPA
volunteer network, weed management/revegetation
- demonstrated community based and best
practice forest establishment techniques
through CSIRO and university conducted
field trips.

Research, Monitoring and
Evaluation
The Farm Forestry program has its basis
in best practice forestry techniques
resulting from spacing, site preparation,
weed management and provenance trials
undertaken by organizations such as
QFRI and DPI&F. The program has
continued to develop processes as a
result of continuous monitoring and
evaluation of growth data gleaned from
established plantations and specific
research plots such as the ‘Nelda
Fan’ spacing and species trial
planted behind the nursery. This work
is carried out by Forestry Consultant
Paul A Ryan on a voluntary basis.
