Envirofund Projects

Kinmond Creek Riparian Improvement Project
Australian Government Envirofund (start November 2007)

The purpose of this project is to improve the riparian condition of and expand the extent of native vegetation on Kinmond Creek and its’ tributaries. Three properties in this area, with sustainable land uses and principles, will undertake revegetation, fencing and weed removal along the riparian areas.

These landholders recognise the value of riparian vegetation in the reduction of nutrient and sediment loads downstream of agricultural production. The project proposes to minimise downstream impacts through the increased filtration and bank stabilization provided by riparian vegetation and the exclusion of hoofed animals within the watercourse. An increase in available habitat for native fauna, and improvements in connectivity of wildlife corridors within the catchment are also expected results.

“Agriculture contributes significantly to the local economy and occurs mainly in the Kin Kin/Cootharaba sub-catchment.” (Noosa River Catchment Management Strategy).

“The very nature of agricultural activities will generally cause some level of environmental impact….impacts can generally be minimised if agricultural activities are appropriately managed.” (Planning Scheme Review : Agriculture & Agricultural Land in Noosa Shire).
