Noosa
Waterwatch is a network of volunteers
who actively participate in water
quality monitoring, data collection
and community education. The coastal
volunteer network monitors water quality
at 24 sites throughout Noosa, Peregian
and Boreen Point. The hinterland volunteer
network monitors water quality at
14 sites throughout Cooroy, Pomona
and Kin Kin. In total, there are 29
volunteers collecting data on 38 sites
across Noosa’s coastal and hinterland
subcatchments.
Physical and chemical
water quality parameters (temperature,
dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity,
turbidity, nitrate-nitrogen and filterable
reactive phosphorus) at each site
are monitored on a monthly basis and
compared to the recommended guidelines
for healthy waterways. Aquatic macroinvertebrate
surveys are also conducted at some
sites. Together, the physical, chemical
and biological parameters give us
a good picture of the ecological health
of the waterway. This helps us to
identify sources of contamination
and to understand the impacts of different
land uses in our local area.
If you have a special
interest in the quality of our water
resources and would like to join the
Noosa Waterwatch network, please contact
